Rainy Day Ideas

These ideas are adapted from our camp rainy day files.  Have fun and be creative!

Balloon Volleyball

Supplies: String, balloon

Tie a string across the middle of the room.  Divide into two teams. Play volleyball with the balloon using the string for a net.

Bed Sheet Ping Pong

Supplies: Bed Sheet; Ping Pong Ball

Form two teams. Each team holds an opposite end of a bed sheet. A ping pong ball is placed in the middle of the sheet. The object is to get the ball to fall off of the other team’s side, for a point. The sheet can be raised and lowered as needed but remind the players to be careful not to "launch" the ball as they will be very inclined to do so.

Subminiature Golf

Supplies:

  • Marbles

  • Popsicle sticks

  • cardboard boxes

  • hard foam sheets (optional)

  • double-stick tape or non toxic glue (optional)

  • Toilet paper or paper towel tubes (optional)

  • small toys (optional)

  • Marker, crayons or paint (optional)

  • blocks (optional)

It's miniature golf with marbles and Popsicle sticks instead of golf balls and putters!

Use the Popsicle sticks as is for putters, or glue on a shorter piece of stick or a rectangle of hard foam for the putter head. Use a large piece of corrugated cardboard for the golf course (two or more pieces can be taped together to get the desired size) and place it on several uniformly tall boxes to elevate it off the floor. Then cut holes in it slightly larger than the diameter of the marbles.

Add decorations (perhaps color the areas around the holes green) and obstacles to the course. Obstacles can include cardboard tubes to putt through, blocks for bumpers, and, of course, plastic animals, figurines, and plastic dinos or space people to create the feel of a true miniature golf course.  Get creative!

Family Extreme Makeover

Choose a family or two to makeover. The makeover crew is given "x" amount of time to complete the"makeover.”  Makeover can include crazy clothing (perhaps with a theme?), new hair styles, makeup, etc. After time is up, present the results in a silly fashion show.

Dance Contest

Come up with a list of dance names like "The Ninja", "The Fish", and "The Frog". Write each dance name on a slip of paper and place it in a hat/bowl.   Each person draws a dance out of the hat and must make up moves to go along with the dance name. Play one minute of your favorite upbeat music and have them show you the latest dance craze.  Once everyone has shown their moves, vote on the best dance and everyone joins in doing the winning dance.

Popsicle Stick Puzzle

Supplies: Popsicle sticks, masking tape, markers

  1. Lay popsicle sticks flat on a table touching each other side by side. You can use as many popsicle sticks as you want.

  2. Tape the popsicle sticks together on the back side using a couple strips of masking tape.

  3. Draw a  picture on the front of the popsicle sticks.

  4. Pull the masking tape off, and you've got your puzzle.

  5. Challenge family members to try to put it together

Water Bottle Yard Art (https://www.cbc.ca/parents/play/view/water-bottle-wind-spirals)

Supplies: empty plastic water bottles, permanent makers, scissors

1. Remove the lids and labels from your bottles and give them a quick wash. Make sure bottles are thoroughly dry on the outside.

2. Once the bottles are dry, color them! Permanent markers are a must for this step.  Washable ink will not adhere to the plastic.

3. With your scissors, remove the flat bottom of the bottle and discard (or save for a future craft project!).

4. Starting at the cut edge, snip around and around, from the bottom of the bottle to the top, to create a spiral. Stop cutting when you get to the smooth, rounded “shoulders” of the bottle.

5. When it stops raining, head out to the yard and find a slender tree branch to hang your creation from. Slide the neck of the bottle onto the branch.
